The PlanG Story

There are things that happen in life, if you’re paying attention, that tell you you’re on the right path. Call it serendipity, kismet, or fate—sometimes it seems like the universe is looking out for you.

Right from the start, PlanG felt like something that was guiding us, not something that we were guiding. The first “click” happened at a chance introduction of our three co-founders—Marti, Melina, and Heather. Sparks flew, brains melded, and all of a sudden there was the idea for PlanG—simple, bold, and true.

Our goal was to create a philanthropic ecosystem where individuals could take charge of and optimize their giving, where all the nation’s nonprofits were provided a level playing field and a fair shake, where employers could strengthen relationships with their employees, and brands could experience a brave new world of consumer loyalty.

Click.

When we talked about PlanG to people, the overriding response was “How do I get involved?” Turns out when you create a place that brings out the good in everyone, everyone wants in.

Getting any company off the ground requires grit, guts, and resolve. There were long days and sleepless nights. But when energy waned or doubt crept in, the universe would give us a gentle nudge to keep going, whether it was through a chance meeting with the CEO of American Express at a restaurant, a random encounter on a train with the former Undersecretary of Commerce, or an unexpected, off-the-cuff pitch to Google in a women’s bathroom.

Click, click, click.

Once we had galvanized investors on our side, we were able to open shop in the heart of Richmond, Virginia’s creative community. One by one we added the brand ambassadors and team members who would help us shape and launch PlanG. By July 2012, we were ready to roll.

The clicks kept coming.

Luck, Marti will remind you, is when preparation meets opportunity. Sometimes it happens in a boardroom. Sometimes it’s a bathroom. But when you live and breathe your idea and see the potential for it everywhere, luck isn’t that hard to find.

Today PlanG continues to grow, bringing more and more businesses, nonprofits, and individuals together to change the world, one good deed at a time.
